My partner showed me this after we watched The Untaimed. IT HURTS SO BAD! LAN XICHEN! The parallels between the Lan brothers are so painful. Every scene drawn in this was amazing. Wonderful job!!!

The narrative denied Lan Xichen a cathartic death, and now he has to live with the tragedy of everything that happened to all the people he trusted and loved and CHOSE. The only person he has left, outside of his brother, is someone he can’t truly trust again. How can he put his full faith in Nie Huaisang, when his warning made him kill Jin Guangyao, perhaps needlessly? When he might’ve lied to make him kill him? He can’t even trust his own judgement anymore. Truly a tragic character.

Just got gut punched bc the “My father wasn’t around” fits for Lan Wangji, Jiang Cheng, and Wei Wuxian why???? Qingheng-Jun was in seclusion to never come out. Jiang Fengmian was around but he wasn’t really a father to his children. Wei Changze died when Wei Wuxian was young so you can’t fault the man. But it just hits really hard when you realize all of them never had good father figures (nor mother figures if you truly look into it) which makes them being good parents so heartbreaking yet heartwarming. They didn’t get the things they’re giving to the juniors aka Jin Ling & Lan Sizhui & Lan Jingyi if you want to debate Jingyi being adopted or cared for by Lan Wangji. Anyways I’m gonna cry over how in depth this story gets when you don’t look at it surface level. 😢

What I think is so compelling about Xichen’s character is his devotion in comparison to Wangji’s. With all the evidence against Meng yao, he still stood with him because he trusted him. I thought he was foolish because what Meng Yao was doing evil. I realized though, that wangji was in the same boat. Despite evidence against him, he relied on his belief and love for Wei Ying. The twin jades are exactly the same. The only difference is that Meng Yao was actually bad and Wei Ying was actually good. They’re just two endings to the same story. I can’t fault Xichen for standing with Meng Yao as I praise wangji for standing with Wei Ying. It’s so tragic.
Your take is amazing! I hadn't thought of it that way before and it's just so good!! I think for me the only difference, is Mingjue's warnings. A close person who Xichen should've trusted but who's words he disregarded out of love. That's why Mingjue being in the place of the sisters in the song hurts so bad.
I don't know I just feel that wangji would never support wei ying if he was actually evil , he would be very decisive , he would do anything to stolhim from going all dark , might have actually tied him up , which was his plan 😅. Wangji liked wei ying as a person , his whole affection was based on wei Ying's unusual rebellious spirit and his tendency of doing right by people. Lan zhan figured it out long ago what he wanted and whose side he will stand by ..I would say he's a better judge of character inspite of his anti social tendency.
Cochran is so compelling. It’s not that he denied the evil, he just… hoped, against all odds, that maybe it’s wrong. That maybe his brother is mistaken, that the person he spent so much time loving and caring for and protecting isn’t the person who would do all these horrible things (up to and including desecrating the corpse of their beloved sworn brother). He had to see for himself, to know for sure, before he turned on JGY.
